At daybreak on July 28, 1976, the city of Tangshan was destroyed by a 7.8 magnitude “地震 (dìzhèn) earthquake” in just 23 seconds. After the earthquake, a young mother faced the difficult choice of saving only one child of her twins. In a hopeless situation, this young mother chose to save the little brother of the twins, sacrificing the sister. This decision changed the fate of the whole family and traumatized the survivors for 32 years.
This is the story of a recently released blockbuster movie “Tangshan Earthquake,” which touches many people’s hearts in China. After the movie was released on July 22, 2010, the “票房 (piàofáng) box office” reached US$75 million in just two weeks.
In the movie, the young mother chose to save the son. Fortunately, her daughter (the sister of the twins) survived and was adopted by a “军人 (jūnrén) soldier.” Let’s take a look at the a scene when the girl wakes up after the earthquake:

On July, 28, 1976, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Tangshan (a city in Hebei province in northern China, west of Beijing). It was one of the ten major natural disasters in China during the 20th century. This earthquake caused a total of 242,000 deaths and seriously injured 164,000 people.
